So far as I understand, Pro Tools is the only major host that lacks VST hosting ability. It is also curious that in his answer Dom contradicts himself, because he does acknowledge there have been user requests for this feature.ģ) Dom suggests that users who want this are interested in using it to overcome limitations in their other host. But so far it would seem that some users certainly do want this feature. THat is the point of this poll - let's see where the balance lies once the poll has had a few days to run. This may be true on paper (will have to enquire) but obviously other developers have successful and secure ways to provide users with a better feature set in this area, and Ableton is alone in denying users this ability.Ģ) Users don't want it. In the meantime, it seems to me that Dom's response contains three points:ġ) The Rewire standard does not allow the slave to host VSTs. I think there is a question here about looking at what the Rewire standard allows, and that's one to consult Propellerhead about. It's surprising surely that those others have stable working products still though. If all the other VST host developers have somehow hacked or broken the standard in order to do what they do - leaving Ableton as the only company that continues to behave properly - then you have a point. If you want to at least support other users of Live who want this feature, please vote for the second yes option so that Ableton might at least consider this afresh. But I would at least be happy if Ableton could recognise the request for this feature and pencil it in for consideration at least at some future time. Of course, there are FAR higher priorities for Live development, I agree.

At present in fact rewire slave mode seems fairly pointless for anyone who uses VSTs a lot.

Not only that - it is useful as well.! If you wish to compose in Live then mix in Pro Tools/Reaper/Audition/Cubase/etc then it's plain annoying that at present everything needs to be bounced, rather than simply open up the project within the other host.

Now anyone who has used Bidule, Reaper, ACID, FL Studio, Project 5 (to name a few) knows that it indeed IS POSSIBLE in all those other programmes to use VSTs when in Rewire slave mode. The effort also is questionable, people asking for it normally just look for a workaround in order to use VSTs in a host that does not support VSTs. Pretty much grey area we will not explore further. Dom wrote:VST support when acting as rewire slave is not specified by the rewire standard.
